Four Qualities of Love

Loving-kindness is a practice of meditation that produces four qualities of love: Friendliness as known as Metta, Compassion known as Karuna, Appreciative Joy, or Mudita and Equanimity or Upekha.

Friendliness is a quality that is expressed by warmth, that warmth that reaches our to others. When this quality of love becomes natural then it overflows into Compassion or Karuna. An attitude of empathy with people's difficulties. Compassion is not pity which merely mimics the quality of concern without the empathy. Appreciative Joy is a real sense of happiness generated by being supportive of other people's good qualities and good fortune. Equanimity, the fourth quality of love is way of remaining caring in all situations.
